Individual health insurance provides benefits for medical care. Prescription assistance programs can be included in some policies. Certain policies may provide for payment of medical bills incurred on a reimbursement basis by paying benefits to the policy holder, payment on a service basis by paying those who supply the services directly, or payment of an indemnity by paying a fixed amount regardless of the sum charged for medical expenses. Health expense or hospitalization insurance might be issued on an individual or group basis. Many of these plans will provide prescription help.

While there are lots of types of benefits offered, personal health expense coverage will commonly be categorized as basic medical expense insurance, major medical coverage, comprehensive medical coverage, and special programs. These plans should cover prescriptions because prescription drugs help so many people. A good number of these plans have mostly been replaced by managed care options and are no longer offered as stand-alone plans. These types of policies have been modified and replaced in answer to changes in the health care field relative to cost containment and market competition.

Basic coverage provided by a personal medical expense policy includes hospital expense, surgical expense and medical expense. These three basics may perhaps be issued as one or separately. Normally this is issued as “first dollar” coverage, which means it does not have a deductible.

Like the name implies, hospital expense coverage offers benefits for expenses incurred during hospitalization. Hospital indemnities are mostly classified into two general groups:

• Room and board, including nursing care and special diets

• Miscellaneous health charges, plus x-rays, laboratory fees, drugs, medical supplies, and operating and treatment rooms

In several cases, surgical benefits could be included for a number of types of surgery and associated expenses. Hospital expense health insurance provides benefits for daily hospital room and board and various hospital charges whilst the insured person is confined to the hospital. The policy may perhaps provide for a guaranteed dollar amount for the daily hospital room and board benefit, although the tendency is toward coverage of not more than the semiprivate room rate unless a private room is medically required. The room and board benefit may possibly be paid on either an indemnity basis or a reimbursement basis, depending on the individual policy.

Indemnity policies are sometimes called dollar amount policies. Room and board rates fluctuate by geographic location, however it is not abnormal to find room and board rates ranging from $350  to $700  per day or more.

Typically, the maximum number of days is from 100  to 250 . More frequently, room and board charges are paid on a reimbursement basis. also called an expenses incurred basis~This is also known as a expenses incurred basis~This is often times called a expenses incurred basis}. Under this plan, the insurance will pay in one of two ways.

• The actual bills for a semiprivate room are covered.

• A percentage of the actual cost is paid, with no specific dollar limit.

Under the first reimbursement option, the medical insurance company will pay the full actual semiprivate room rate, regardless of what it is. Under the second reimbursement option, the health insurance carrier pays a specific percentage, regardless of what the actual charges are. A usual percentage is 80%.

To sum up, under the actual charges type of reimbursement program, the plan will pay the actual amount charged for a semiprivate room with no regard to a specific dollar limit. With the percentage type of reimbursement plan, the policy may pay a specified percentage of the actual bill.
