What are the causes of acne?
Worldwide there are about 60 million people who are suffering from acne. Most people develop acne during adolescence. Usually, it is most prevalent in those aged 16 to 18 years. Some doctors believe that the results of acne is from several related factors even though the exact cause of acne is yet unknown. There are many factors but one of the most important is the increase of the hormones called androgens or male sex hormones. These increase in both boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne.
Below are the most common reasons for acne
There are higher levels of sex hormones at puberty than in younger children.
Converted in the skin to DHT or dihydrotestosterone are these hormones which stimulates oil glands to enlarge.
The oil glands, called sebaceous glands, produce sebum. It is more likely for acne to be troublesome if there is more sebum.
If the skin pores are blocked by sebum and keratin, then comedones can develop. It’s possible for the wall of the follicles to rupture. Comedonal debris and bacteria can cause pustules or inflammatory lesions or even acne pimples.
Here are the aggravating factors
There are those that have particularly severe acne. This could be the result of family members having bad acne or genetic factors. Researchers believe that the tendency to develop acne can be inherited from parents. An example would be studies showing that many school-age boys with acne have a family history of the disorder.
Hormonal factors (higher levels of androgenic hormones) due to:
Polycystic ovaries which are common.
Deficiency in enzymes such as sterol hydroxylase deficiency which are rare.
Excessive corticosteroids (eg Cushing’s disease) (rare)
Depression and psychological stress.
There are also environmental factors such as:
Swelling of the skin caused by high humidity.
Cosmetics especially certain moisturisers, foundation and pomades (watch out for lanolin, petrolatum, vegetable oils, butyl stearate, lauryl alcohol and oleic acid)
Petroleum oils.
Pressure from headbands & chin straps (eg: “fiddler’s neck”).
Pressure from backpacks, tight collars, sports helmets or equipments, or even tight sports uniforms.
Another reasons for stress is when there is a production of hormones such as cortisol which can aggravate acne. Different hormone levels are brought because of stress. The body prompts the skins oil glands to enlarge and secrete more oil due to hormone changes. White heads, black heads, and pimples are the result.
Certain medications. An excess of Vitamins B1, B6, and B12 can cause acne flare-ups even though vitamins are good for your body. Avoid overuse even though these vitamins are good for the skin.
Avoid picking and squeezing because this can actually send the infection deeper into the skin and cause scarring.
